Craft beverage, without the noise

A discovery platform for people who care about what they drink — built and curated by a former brewery owner who got tired of press releases dressed up as journalism.

What we do

Phantom Ales catalogs and covers craft beverage producers across the United States — breweries, wineries, distilleries, cideries, meaderies, kombucha makers, and independent non-alcoholic beverage producers. Our database currently tracks over 29,000 producers, with detailed profiles for more than 15,000 that maintain active operations.

We combine that data with original editorial content: producer profiles, daily industry briefings (The Mash), video spotlights, and curated discovery pages. The goal is to help craft beverage enthusiasts find producers worth visiting, worth trying, and worth following — and to help independent producers reach the drinkers most likely to appreciate what they're making.

Why we built this

Craft beverage is one of the most fragmented industries in the United States. Thousands of small producers operate independently, most without the marketing budget or reach of larger brands. Drinkers who want to find them rely on word of mouth, regional publications, or chance encounters at festivals and bottle shops.

Existing directories are often stale, incomplete, or regional. The specialist publications do excellent work but cover a fraction of the producers out there. We wanted something comprehensive, maintained, and genuinely useful — a single resource you can turn to when you're traveling, hosting, gifting, or just looking for something new.

Who's behind it

Phantom Ales is operated by Robert, a former craft brewery owner with over a decade of experience in the craft beverage industry. Prior to this, he built and sold a B2B data company serving thousands of business customers, and maintains ongoing interest in the intersection of industry data and consumer discovery.

The site is independently owned and operated. We aren't part of a larger media company, aren't backed by distributors, and don't accept payment for favorable coverage. Our editorial perspective comes from actual industry experience, not sponsored placement.

How we gather data

Our producer database is built from public records (state and federal licensing data, TTB filings), direct research from producer websites, publicly available business information, and continuous updates as new producers open and existing ones change. We validate information against multiple sources and update regularly.

For each producer, we aim to provide accurate contact information, location details, operating hours, product offerings, amenities, and editorial context. If you're a producer and notice something out of date or incorrect on your listing, please contact us — we'll update it.

Our editorial approach

The Mash is our daily editorial briefing covering craft beverage industry news, new releases, notable events, and trends worth knowing about. We aim for perspective over pure aggregation — telling you what happened and why it matters.

Our producer profiles are informational. We don't write reviews in the traditional sense, because taste is personal and we haven't tried most of what we cover. Instead, we give you the facts, the context, and the sources to make your own decisions.

Responsible enjoyment

Content on Phantom Ales is intended for adults of legal drinking age (21+ in the United States, varies by jurisdiction). We cover beverages as a cultural and industry subject, not as an endorsement of alcohol consumption. Please drink responsibly, know your local laws, and never drink and drive.

We also cover the non-alcoholic craft beverage space enthusiastically. Some of the most interesting producers in craft beverage today are in non-alcoholic — a trend we expect to keep highlighting.
